Most Popular Films Of 2011

Movie buffs all knew that 2011 was set to be a bumper year for the industry and so far it has not disappointed. With cinema goers eagerly anticipating the final instalment in a well loved franchise, and sequels to a number of popular hits, the film industry knew it was bringing some hot offerings to the altar of viewing this year.

So far the most popular movies of 2011 with those visiting apollo cinemas and other venues are unsurprising – with the top box office grossing titles including:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – the second instalment of the final book of JK Rowling’s wizarding saga marks the end of an era for fans of the books and films. The film was an emotional one for fans and actors alike with many a tear shed on the set an in the cinema seats as the final takes brought to a close the fantasy story of a generation. Lauded as the best of the series – the final film is well worth a watch.

  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon – the popular robot/machine franchise did it again this year. Shia LeBoeuf is joined by Rosie Huntington-Whitely after the unceremonious departure of Megan Fox from the multi-million dollar line up.

  • The Hangover Part II: You’d think that Alan, Doug, Phil and Stu would’ve learned their lesson in Vegas, but it seems that this is not the case as two years on from the initial stag-night-saga hit the crew head for Thailand and a who new set of pre-wedding problems. Using its own tried and tested format, the second Hangover movie is equally as hilarious as its predecessor – making it unsurprising that the romp was the third biggest box office draw for fans so far this year.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Four films in and the Pirates of the Caribbean team is still churning out true blockbusters. In this instalment of the massively successful franchise everyone’s favourite pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is joined by starlet Penelope Cruz as they hunt for the elusive Fountain of Youth. Swashbucklingly good stuff all round.

  • Fast and Furious 5: Five films in and the Fast and Furious team are still getting it right. Vin Diesel and crew play off criminals against the authorities, with much high-octane adventure as a result. No petrol heads left the cinema disappointed!

  • Cars 2: In a year of sequels, it is no surprise that this Disney Pixar offering stormed the box office, with kids (and big kids!) everywhere eager to get the latest on the exploits of Lightning McQueen and friends – who this time round include the voice of veteran Brit actor Michael Caine, who takes on the role of spy svengali Finn McMissile.

  • Thor: Kenneth Brannagh’s latest directorial offering takes a stroll into the world of Norse mythology to tell the story of Thor the thunder god, who finds himself send away from the heavenly kingdom of Asgard to live with the mere mortals. He soon assimilates and becomes one of their most powerful defenders – with much action resulting.

  • Captain America: The latest in a long line of comic book adaptations stars Chris Evans as the patriot who volunteers as a human guinea pig after being deemed unfit for active duty and turned down by the armed forces. As a result he is turned into the ultimate fighting machine – Captain America.
